Pie Baking Contest at Crane’s Mill

The pie baking contest was filled with fun! Crane’s Mill resident Don D., the only gentleman in the contest, took home top prize!

On Friday, November 30, Crane’s Mill held the community’s first ever pie baking contest. There were eight entries in all, including pumpkin, apple, key lime, sweet potato, and even an apple-free “mock apple” pie!

Pies were blind-taste-tested by a panel of judges (one resident, Ms. Phyllis Novick, and two staff members–Chad Murin, VP and Executive Director, and Tom Ragusa, Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications). The judges scored the delectable entries on their taste, texture, and appearance.

The first-place winner was the “Z-crust Apple Pie,” submitted by Don D., the only male resident in the contest. Don began baking his pies as a way to prove that not only women could bake a delicious apple pie, and based on the judges and the crowd in attendance, it’s clear the Don has broken any pie gender barrier that may exist.

A fun time was had by all, with plenty of pie-tasting and a bunch of laughs in between bites! We’re all looking forward to the next competition.
