Adult School of Montclair offers Classical Music Course at Crane’s Mill

A program from the Adult School of Montclair

Crane’s Mill will be hosting a music appreciation course for the Adult School of Montclair, “Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.3”, taught by George Marriner Maull.  The class will be held on 4 consecutive Wednesdays—October 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM. The class will be held in Hinman Hall, the Crane’s Mill auditorium.

Registration is required. The cost of the course is $69.00 per person plus the $10.00 registration fee. Registration can be done online on the Adult School’s website (http://www.adultschool.org/) or by calling the Adult School at 973-746-6636.

Mill Club Members are able to attend the class at a discounted rate of $69.00. The adult school of Montclair waived the $10.00 registration fee as a discount to Crane’s Mill residents and Mill Club members. Course Description

Be swept away by Rachmaninoff as you listen and learn about one of his most technically challenging works, Piano Concerto No. 3. Examine each of the three movements of this amazing work as you heighten your listening pleasure. In the fourth session, compare different interpretations of select passages as well as enjoy a complete recorded performance!

About the Instructor: George Marriner Maull

George Marriner Maull, Artistic Director of The Discovery Orchestra, is a passionate advocate of classical music listener education. He is becoming nationally and internationally well regarded for his televised Discovery Concerts®, Discovery Orchestra Chats on YouTube, and as the featured pre-concert lecturer for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Bank of America Classical Series. The Discovery Orchestra’s Emmy-nominated Bach to the Future© and Telly Award-winning and Emmy-nominated Discover Beethoven’s 5th© television shows have brought Maestro Maull’s engaging approach into millions of American homes.

He brings both educational and performance credentials to this project. In addition to classroom teaching experience in Louisville and New York City, from 1979 until 1997 he was Music Director of the New Jersey Youth Symphony where he worked with more than 1,000 young talented musicians. As a professional violist, he was a member of the Louisville Orchestra, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic and American Symphony Orchestra, performing under legends Stravinsky, Levine, Copland and Foss. During his nearly 40-year conducting career Maestro Maull has held a number of posts including Music Director of the Louisville Ballet and the Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey, has led performances across the United States, at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, in England, Belgium, The Netherlands, Hungary and Romania, and has recorded three CD’s conducting the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. A Philadelphia native, he received his first training with members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, earned two degrees in music performance from the University of Louisville, and studied at The Juilliard School with composer Lawrence Widdoes.
